paint a garage door

Painting a garage door in the best possible way is not just a purely aesthetic solution: it is also an action that must be performed at least once or twice to ensure greater reliability and durability to the same structure, often put to the test by the action of atmospheric agents, such as cold, frost, rain or excessive heat. In this guide, we want to show you how to paint a garage door and do a perfect job from all points of view.

How to paint a garage door?

You will need:

  • Paint for exteriors
  • Primer
  • Roller
  • Brush
  • Sponge
  • Sandpaper
  • Dish soap
  • Scotch tape
  • Protective plastic sheet

Cleanse with soap

First, you will need to get a soft sponge soaked in soap (the one with which you wash the dishes or that of a normal soap will be fine). The door must then be scrubbed carefully to completely remove any dirt that may be present. In fact, painting a clean door will be much easier and easier.

Work with sandpaper

After having washed the garage door, you will need to make sure that it does not have any swellings, bumps, or scrapes. In this case, you will need to use sandpaper to even the surface. Before moving on to using sandpaper, you will need to cover the areas you do not want to paint with masking tape. Also, make sure to put a protective plastic sheet under the door.

Apply the first coat of paint

Now you can start with the actual painting process. Paint the entire surface of the door with a roller. You will have to pay particular attention to the finishing touches: around the areas where the roller could not do a perfect job, finish the details using a medium-sized brush. The advice is to apply a paint that is not lighter than the one previously present in order not to risk creating a too imperfect color. Suppose you want to significantly change the color that existed previously. In that case, you will have to apply a coat of primer on the door before applying the second paint in order to ensure a more homogeneous color.

Finish and remove the tape

Therefore, both with the roller and with the brush, the paint must be applied uniformly, working from top to bottom but avoiding letting the paint run. The advice is to finish the first painting in just one day. It will then be necessary to wait at least 12 hours and, if necessary, apply a second coat of paint to strengthen its consistency. Finally, all you have to do is remove the adhesive tapes and the protective plastic sheet and enjoy your new door, restored to its former glory.

Carry out the first coat of paint in a single day, and then eventually finish everything the following day
